Catway's Game of Licks


  • Left-click to place a critter
  • Right-click to change critter
  • Scroll-wheel to zoom
  • WASD / ZQSD / IJKL / Arrow Keys to move camera

  • F11 to toggle fullscreen (Windows-only)


NOTE: I made this right after I wrapped up my GGJ 2020 site, I was very tired, and once again only used 2 of the 3 hours because I started at the last minute. It has several bugs, namely with the core Conways's Game of Life mechanic. There are more features and bug-fixes to be added.

This demo was made in about 2 hours for TriJam 55.

The jam theme was: Fun In A Blank Room

The game is a massive blank room that only becomes interesting when you populate it with critters.

The optional challenges I followed were:

  • Open-source
  • Use Asset Jam assets
  • Grid-based game
  • Incremental game mechanic

The source code is available for download below. I used the Animals Wearing Jackets Asset Pack by snailscode for Asset Jam 2. The entire game is a large grid, with all units fitting neatly into the visual grid and all gameplay being grid-based. The score is an incremental game mechanic, increasing as you click to add new creatures, and as they reproduce in patterns.
